CULTURAL TREASURES
The underwater cultural heritage in the coastal zone consists mainly of wrecks dating from the proto-Helladic period (2700-2200BC) to the 2nd World War (20th century). There are in total 9 wrecks.
· A proto-Helladic wreck dating between 2700 and 2200 is located in Giagana bay.
· Three roman wrecks dating between 1st cent BC and 2nd cent A.D are located in Dascalio islet, Antisami beach and at the entrance to Fiscardo bay. The latter is one of the largest found in the Mediterranean Sea, the cargo is in very good condition and still keeps the ship’s shape. The remnants of another Roman wreck lies on the seafloor off the west coast of the nearby Ithaca Island in Polis cove.
The other five wrecks are 2nd World War wrecks.
· The HMS Perseus British submarine
· The SS passenger boat Ardena
· A wooden wreck off Kapros headland, which, according to the records, may be the Italian ship Alma. Alma was requisitioned by the German army and used for transporting supplies and ammunition to the island and was sunk in the area in January 1944
· Two airplanes British Bristol Beaufighter KV930 and a German Junker 88 lie on the seafloor off the nearby Ithaca island.
